A quick cartoon I made yesterday morning for my school paper. It's meant to parody the phobia of socialism America seems to have as a whole. I do realize Canada is no communist or socialist, although they do have such things as socialized medicine.

Now Socialism and Communism are two different, yet simaler concepts.
Socialism is where private enterprise take a back seat to productivity and quality in production at the direction of the state. The state in turn takes care of the people's needs (food, housing, healthcare, education, and so on) and other stately needs.
Communism on the other hand has never actually happened. Communism is an ideal where a whole nation and eventually the world would be like one big commune, but with industry and such. Where workers work only for the betterment of each other and to supply the needs of others. Communists view Socialism as a stepping stone to Communism as the state can direct the nation(s) so communism then the state would disintegrate into bureaus to simply regulate and keep track of things with no power to enforce anything in realistic terms.
Now since most Socialist states were aiming for communism, they cracked down on private enterprise since it would not be allowed in a communist state, when they got their.
Now socialism in its purist form (free of communist influences) would allow free enterprise as the state saw fit. Example: The state would control the equal distribution of food to all people but you could still go and buy a camera or an xbox because you dont need it to live.
